Access to affordable post-secondary education

In November we asked a group of high school students about the kind of government issues that were important to them.

Then we asked them to vote on the ONE topic they’d like to see debated in the BC Youth Parliament. This issue garnered more than half the votes.

BCYP debated this topic in the BC Legislative Chamber on Dec 30. After over an hour of debate, the motion was defeated, 38-31.

It seems to me that a high percentage of online voters agreed with the way the BCYP voted. The fact that the BCYP vote was closer than the online one might be due to the different age range – university rather than high school, and therefore with different concerns and views.

I am not surprised at the results of the vote, the fact they are so different from ours at BCYP is because people who come online and vote don’t the option of hearing everyone else’s arguments and stories and so just go by their initial reaction. I wish more young people would have been brought in whilst we debated the resolution, maybe your vote results would be a bit different!

No matter what social or financial demographic a student comes from, post secondary education should be availible. It’s a modern necessity that the BC government should provide to students who cannot afford to level out the playing ground. Equality and opertunity first. Merit second.
